Background Checked vs. Background Cleared: Why the Difference Matters in Pet Care

When you hire someone to care for your pets, you are also trusting that person with access to your home, your keys, your security systems, and your property while you are away.

That is why we believe pet owners deserve more than a vague statement that someone has been “background checked.”

At Critter Sitter of VA, every employee must successfully complete our required background screening process and have a clear criminal history that meets our employment standards before becoming part of our team.

That distinction matters.

Background Checked Does Not Always Mean Background Cleared

The phrase “background checked” means that some type of screening was performed.

By itself, it does not necessarily tell you what the screening found. A person can have a background check completed even if that check returns criminal history.

That is why consumers should look beyond whether a check was run and ask what standards had to be met afterward.

Why This Matters in Pet Care

Pet care involves a level of access that many other service industries do not. A sitter may have access to your:

  • Home

  • Keys and lockboxes

  • Door and garage codes

  • Alarm information

  • Personal belongings

  • Pet medications

  • Animals

  • Property while you are traveling

Visits may also take place early in the morning, in the evening, on weekends, or while your home is otherwise unoccupied.

That is a significant level of trust. Pet owners should feel comfortable asking exactly how a company determines who is allowed to have that access.

Credentials Are Not the Same as Background Clearance

Pet owners may see terms such as licensed, bonded, insured, certified, association member, professionally trained, or background checked when comparing pet-care providers.

Those credentials may all be valuable, but they are not interchangeable.

Being insured or bonded does not necessarily mean someone has a clear criminal history. Holding a certification or professional membership does not necessarily establish a clear criminal history either.

Background screening is its own part of the hiring and safety process.

Ask What “Background Checked” Actually Means

When someone will have unsupervised access to your pets and home, it is reasonable to ask questions.

Consider asking:

  • Is every employee or caregiver screened?

  • Is screening completed before someone begins providing care?

  • Does the company require employees to meet a defined clearance standard?

  • Who performs the screening?

  • How recently was the screening completed?

  • Can the sitter or company provide appropriate verification of its screening process?

  • Are the people entering your home employees or independent contractors?

  • Is the company insured and bonded?

  • How are caregivers hired, trained, supervised, and monitored?

Simply seeing the words “background checked” on a website, directory listing, or social-media profile should not necessarily be the end of the conversation.

It is also reasonable to ask for appropriate verification of insurance, bonding, certifications, and training when those credentials are being used to establish trust.

Critter Sitter of VA Uses a Company-Wide Hiring Standard

Our background screening requirement is not limited to pet sitters or dog walkers. It applies across the company.

Every employee must meet our screening and employment standards before joining the Critter Sitter of VA team.

For employees providing direct client care, that screening is reinforced by a broader system designed around accountability, reliability, and safety.

Trust Is Built Into the Way We Operate

Our professional standards include:

  • W-2 employees

  • Company-wide background screening requirements

  • Structured hiring and onboarding

  • Licensed, bonded, and insured professional pet care

  • Pet First Aid and CPR training

  • GPS-tracked visits

  • Detailed visit journals and photos

  • Established home-access procedures

  • Team oversight

  • Backup coverage and team-based care

Trust should not depend on one claim, one credential, or one individual sitter. It should be built into the way a company operates.

Know Who You Are Allowing Into Your Home

Choosing a pet-care provider involves much more than finding someone who loves animals. You are deciding who may have access to your pets, your property, and your home when you are not there.

Ask how people are screened. Ask what professional claims actually mean. Ask for appropriate verification.

You should not have to simply take someone’s word for it.

At Critter Sitter of VA, we believe that work should be done before an employee ever reaches your front door.

For more than 10 years, we have served families throughout the Fredericksburg region with professional dog walking and in-home pet sitting supported by company-wide hiring standards, trained W-2 employees, documented visits, team coverage, and systems designed around accountability.
